Swaledale Waterfalls & Barns — Autumn Light & High Pass Sunset

Spend an autumn day exploring the wild upper reaches of Swaledale — a dramatic, narrow valley filled with traditional field barns, cascading rivers, stone footbridges, and steep-sided fells. With September’s softer lighting, turning foliage, and quiet lanes, it offers some of the most rewarding landscape photography in the Yorkshire Dales.

What You Will Learn

  • Water Movement Mastery: Using ND filters and fine-tuning shutter speeds to control silky water versus dynamic rapids.
  • Barn & Meadow Compositions: Using dry-stone walls and contours as natural leading lines through the valley.
  • Managing Valley Light: Handling high contrast and shadow pockets in deep valleys during the middle of the day.
  • Intimate vs. Grand Vistas: Switching seamlessly between tight woodland waterfall details and vast panoramic fell sweeps.
  • High-Pass Sunset Techniques: Composing distant ridge layers and golden hour skies from Buttertubs Pass.
  • Tripod Workflow: Solid, level framing on rocky riverbanks and uneven moorland paths.

All tuition is delivered clearly in the field with plenty of time to practise and review.

What To Bring

  • Camera: DSLR, mirrorless, or quality bridge camera with manual exposure modes.
  • Tripod: Essential for long-exposure waterfall and sunset photography.
  • Filters: Polariser and neutral density (ND) filters (recommended for water).
  • Batteries & Cards: Fully charged batteries and plenty of spare card space.
  • Footwear: Waterproof walking boots with good grip for damp riverbanks and uneven rocks.
  • Warm Layers & Waterproofs: Weather can change quickly and Buttertubs Pass is often breezy.
  • Provisions: Packed lunch and water (upper Swaledale has very few shops).

Where We Will Explore

A progressive scenic route following the Swale from its quiet headwaters down to Keld, finishing high on the mountain pass.

1. Wain Wath Force

A wide, shelf-like waterfall at the head of Swaledale. With easy grassy banks and plenty of room to spread out, this is our opening briefing spot and an ideal location to dial in your shutter speeds and ND filter techniques.

2. Stonesdale Lane & Keld Cascades

Crossing the stone bridge, we pass classic stone barns and explore the series of stepped waterfalls and rapids beside the Keld yurt area, focusing on composition, intimate cascades, and rocky riverbeds.

3. East Gill Force & Kisdon Force

The signature waterfall section. East Gill Force cascades through a leafy ravine into the River Swale over multiple rock tiers. Further along the woodland trail lies dramatic Kisdon Force, framed by steep gorge crags and early autumn foliage.

4. Field Barns & Dry-Stone Walls (Keld to Thwaite)

Swaledale is famous for having the highest concentration of traditional stone barns in the UK. We take our time travelling down the valley, stopping at iconic viewpoints where stone barns sit nestled amongst criss-crossing walls and rolling fell sides.

5. Buttertubs Pass & Sunset

We climb the famous mountain road dividing Swaledale and Wensleydale. After viewing the ancient limestone potholes, we set up on the southern ridge for an open sunset across Wensleydale, capturing golden hill layers and distant silhouette fells.

How The Day Runs

⏰ Schedule: Meet at 10:30 AM at Wain Wath; finish at sunset (~7:30 PM). Optional fish & chips together in Hawes afterwards!
🚗 Travel: Self-drive between stops along the valley route, with optional car sharing for tighter parking spots.
🚻 Facilities: Public facilities available at Rukins Campsite (Keld) and in Hawes.
