Take Landscape Photos You’re Actually Proud to Keep
Ever stood in front of a cracking scene, clicked the shutter, and come away with a photo that looks flat, cluttered, or just a bit underwhelming? That’s completely normal — and exactly what this workshop is designed to fix.
What You Will Learn
- Cleaner Compositions: Learning to spot lines, spirals, shapes, and natural focal points in complex terrain.
- Mastering Low Light & Exposure: Handling contrast and keeping highlights intact in early spring light.
- Water & Long Exposures: Using neutral density (ND) and polarising filters to produce smooth water effects.
- Simplifying Woodland: Decluttering trees and mossy ravines into calm, balanced photographs.
- Architectural Landscape: Composing dramatic masonry, arches, and reservoirs at Scar House Dam.
- Lens & Framing Confidence: Knowing exactly when to choose wide panoramic sweeps versus telephoto compression.
No tedious jargon or classroom theory — everything is explained and demonstrated live on location.
What To Bring
- Camera: Any DSLR, mirrorless, or bridge camera with manual exposure options.
- Tripod: Strongly recommended for sharp waterfall exposures and sunset scenes.
- Filters: Polariser and ND filters (if you own them; we can advise if you don’t).
- Batteries & Memory: Fully charged batteries and plenty of spare card capacity.
- Clothing & Footwear: Sturdy walking boots, waterproof jacket, warm layers, hat, and gloves.
- Food & Drink: Packed lunch, snacks, and water to keep you fuelled throughout the day.
Where We Will Explore
A carefully planned route covering Nidderdale’s best scenery from valley floor to moorland summits.
1. Toft Gate Limekiln
An atmospheric 19th-century industrial relic set high above Greenhow. The preserved stone flue, circular kiln chambers, and weathered masonry provide outstanding textures, geometric arches, and graphic shapes.

2. Coldstones Cut
One of Yorkshire’s most extraordinary public artworks. Massive stone spiral paths lead to elevated platforms looking directly into the colossal limestone quarry below, with panoramic views stretching out to the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales.

3. Gouthwaite Reservoir
A tranquil nature reserve framed by gentle rolling fells. Perfect for practicing minimalistic compositions, water reflections, and balancing expansive shorelines with distant hills.
4. Hidden Woodland Waterfalls at Lofthouse
Tucked away in quiet woodland gullies, these picturesque cascades offer mossy stone shelves and clear mountain water. We’ll set up tripods here for silky long-exposure shots and close-up water abstracts.

5. Scar House Reservoir & Masonry Dam
An engineering masterpiece at the very head of the dale. The imposing stone arches, valve towers, and sweeping water lines provide rich opportunities for dramatic, graphic architectural landscape imagery.

6. Middlesmoor & Valley Sunset
Perched high at the top of the dale, the churchyard and stone lanes of Middlesmoor boast one of the finest views in Yorkshire, looking directly down the full length of the dale as the sun sets.

No. Any DSLR, mirrorless, or bridge camera is absolutely fine. You don’t need top-of-the-range kit to capture great images.
What if I’m still a beginner?
That’s exactly who this day is designed for. Everything is explained clearly and patiently while you’re stood right in front of the scene.
What if the weather turns bad?
This is Yorkshire — moody weather often brings the finest atmosphere and drama! The itinerary is flexible and adapted to make the absolute best of the day’s conditions.
Will there be a lot of strenuous walking?
Not at all. Total walking is around 1–2 miles broken into easy, bite-sized walks at each location with plenty of stops.
