Manchester Street Tour
Nowehere outside London has such a rich variety of classic and modern architecture.
From the victorian rail and canal in glory days around Castlefield to the ultra modern glass around the John Daltron Library. The gritty bricks mix with glass all over this amazing centre.
What We’ll Shoot
We recommend parking at Charles Street, near the old UMIST campus, as it’s cheap, central and usually has lots of space.
From here we will walk west towards Castlefield – talking in Whitworth Street, canals, Palace Theatre, railway arches and hundreds of people.
Castlefield is an amazing mix of arches, girders, water and bridges – with a lock and bars mixed in.
After Castlefield, we’ll take a walk to the Beetham Tower and Deansgate – the long shopping street, and huge sky scraper
From here we head to the river – via some towering glass buildings, lots of architecture and people photography opportunities here.
We then head up towards Victoria Station via St Anne’s square and the Corn Exchange – we’ve got a real mix of buildings and people here – this is the high-end shopping area.
Victoria has Urbis, the train station and the medieval cathedral, which is small but stunning.
From here we head back towards the cars – this is a great journey through the shopping areas, northern quarter, Picadilly and maybe the Canal Street area.
What we’ll learn
City tours are all about:-
- big buildings – architecture techniques and HDR
- story telling – looking out for funny or poignant scenes – stickers, syringes, lost shoes….
- interiors – if we can get inside cathedrals, they’re a great place to shoot
- people – learn some street techniques, how to capture people going about their daily business
What to bring
I’d suggest long lenses for people and story telling photography and wide lenses for architecture and interiors
Tripods are great for HDR and architecture – especially interiors where it may be dark
Filters are not as important – but a polariser will be useful for blue skies, glass reflections and canals.
Who is it for?
Everyone – this is a tour in a safe group, so advanced people can discover great new locations, beginners can learn about composition etc.
